WINTERIZING YOUR RODS

For me, trout season is never over. I may not be on the water, but somehow I still manage to drag the season out all year, repairing waders, tying flies, researching next year’s trips and cleaning up my gear.

FLY TYING TIP - FOAM STRIKE INDICATORS

I have been a fly-fishing guide for a long time and I cannot count the number of times I have been in a fly shop and looked at the jar of foam strike indicators setting by the cash register.

THE DAY OF SMALL THINGS

As the days of summer begin to wane the size of the hatching insects seems to decrease in direct proportion to the decreasing length of the day. Back in the days before time I remember looking forward to those late summer days when on Michigan’s Au Sable River the first Tricos and Pseudocleons* would make their long awaited appearance.

FEEDBACK

"...the folks who discover large fish and give up on small ones weren't really fishing in the first place, methinks... "

"I try to live every moment of every day with nothing more on my agenda than to wring the best out of what is right there in front of me."

YELLOW

It has been dry for several days. A friend called to tell me that the approach to one of my favorite ponds had dried out. He had been in to cultivate a field. That was enough incentive to decide that was the pond to fish.

FEATURED SPONSOR - TEMPLE FORK

When I checked out the Temple Fork website I was immediately impressed by the stable of fly rods that they have available. They have fly rods for every type of angling and the prices are very impressive.

THIS SUMMER

This summer will either prove to be my greatest achievement as a father or the death of me. For about 4 months now my oldest son (Micah) has been asking me to teach him how to “throw a fly rod”.

THE GOLDEN VICE FLY

A few weeks ago I was just tying up some flies to no particular pattern and ended up with this fly. At the time I just wanted to use up some of my golden pheasant feathers. I’m sure every fly tier ends up buying a golden pheasant skin at some point, but then realises there are not a lot of dressings that call for it.

Editor's Note
The Ladyfisher and I have chosen to escape the winter in Montana and retreat to warmer climes in southeastern Arizona. We will be in transit for a few days and then it will take a few days to get everything set up before we are back on-line again. During our sojourn in sunny Arizona I would appreciate your angling images for use on the front page. Unless you want images of cactus and dry washes on the front page each week I need your images. In addition, please send your fly of the week submissions and full length articles. While we will not be able to see them for a few days they will be on our server and ready for me to edit for the upcoming issues. With the Christmas season quickly approaching please remember to check our sponsors for possible gifts, and tell your husband, wife, children or significant other where they can find just what you want by checking out our sponsor page.
