Mustad started manufacturing and selling hooks in the 1870s, and it’s likely that if you have been tying flies for more than just a couple decades your first fly tying hooks were Mustad hooks.

A JULY DAY ON THE SPRING CREEKS OF PARADISE VALLEY (part 4)

Lunch:  Generally when I am fishing myself or guiding I will break for lunch between 1:30 PM and 2:00 PM depending on the hatch.  Then I recommend that you eat a decent lunch, you have now been on the stream since 7:00 AM, around seven hours.

FALL BAETIS

Low clouds obscure the tops of the mountains, there is a hint of rain, and the wind sliding down from the north sends a shiver through my frame. Ah, it’s a perfect fall Baetis day.

PACKING UP

We had the first hard frost here last night, up until just a few days ago we were still picking and eating fresh tomatoes from our garden. My husband cut the remaining useable fruits and put them on the bench in the garage.

GOOD HOOKING - LOUSY LANDING

It has been another dry week that allows me to get into another pond. I like this pond as it has a good population of good sized crappie. I was able to head out while it was still dark and get to the pond before the sun started to come up.

ON THE FLY - DAY PLANNER

Here at FAOL we occasionally receive books and other items that are sent to us by our readers. Just the other day the Ladyfisher received a 2011 Fly Fishing Day Planner from Mitch Drewes at Hidden River Productions in Terrace, BC, Canada. It is such a nice day planner that we thought that some of our readers might enjoy having one or perhaps give one as a gift.

CROOKED FORK CREEK OCTOBER CADDIS

Had the good fortune to capture a live one a couple weeks ago – an October Caddis on the Crooked Fork Creek in Northern Idaho. The thing that struck me, compared to my recollections of other specimens I have been able to get my hands on was how “leggy” this big fall caddis is. Another thing about this particular insect was how uniformly colored it was. While there were varying tones on different parts of the fly, the basic shade was a slightly orange medium tan.
