A JULY DAY ON THE SPRING CREEKS OF PARADISE VALLEY

The pages of this informational pamphlet will contain information on fishing the Paradise Valley Spring Creeks during a day in the month of July. It is important for the reader to understand that I will be trying to cover everything that a fly fisher MIGHT encounter during July. I surely won’t cover everything in twenty nine pages, for that would take more like 500 pages.

PUTTING AWAY THE TOYS

During the week we hooked up the canoe trailer and spent one last day trying to fool some trout on a prairie reservoir that’s a couple hours’ drive away from our Montana home. At least that was the plan. Our success at this particular lake this year has been dismal and this last trip was no exception. When we left home the weather was clear and bright with not a breath of wind blowing, but as we approached our destination the wind began to blow.

COST PLUS?

The Upper Yellowstone River in Yellowstone National Park (YNP) has probably been on the list of ‘best places’ for fly fisherman since the first articles appeared in Fly Fisherman magazine back in the 1960s. Everyone who made it to the West in the golden days before Whirling Disease had the magic experience of catching seemingly endless fish.

WHAT A BLAST

It has not rained for several days, and the wind has been blowing so it’s time to head to my favorite pond. I’m sure that I can get in, but will stop short of the bad spot to make sure. Turns out that it is not bad and I get into the pond.

A TEACHABLE TRAGEDY

A terrible, tragic accident occurred on Sunday, and one of our brothers in arms and of the fly lost his life. Our thoughts are with his friends, family, and those fellow anglers who were with him at the time. This is a horrible time for all of them. And no one should interpret anything found in this communication as an assignment of blame. That is not appropriate or the intent of my message.

Neil brings us another cartoon.

Sometimes, maybe, it's better to not boast about reaching the top of your profession.

PURPLE AND NOT STARLING

Much has been written about hackling over the years, by a variety of authors. I love silk thread and I personally like sparse hackle on all my flies, the fish like them. I hope you enjoy them too.
