Red At Night - Fly Angler's Delight

THE UGLY DAMSEL

This was a long time ago, when I’d only been fly fishing for about a year, so it probably wasn’t the way I remember it. I had a week day off and decided to fish the Pere Marquette River. I thought I would miss the weekend overcrowding and the aluminum super hatch that way.

NATURAL FOOD ORGANISMS IN STILLWATERS

The subject of natural food organisms has filled many volumes, and there is no way that I can do the subject justice in just a couple of pages. Therefore the following will be a quick look at the most common food organisms found in stillwater fisheries.

TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER

Recent I have spent several days inventorying the books here at FAOL. There is a vast collection of fly-fishing books; most of them plough the same ground with a new plough. This started me to ponder what is the most profound advancement that has been made in fly-fishing in the last 50 or so years?

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW (well almost)

If you’ve been around Fly Anglers OnLine (FAOL) for a while you may already know everything you need to know - and even can find everything you need help with right here on FAOL. But if you’re new around these parts, here is a little help to get you off on the right foot and hopefully catching fish! After all, that’s the name of the game right?

FLY TYING WITH CYANOACRYLATE = CA – SUPER GLUE

Get several fly tiers around a table and there is sure to be disagreement on the best glue to use for joining fly tying materials. To some it may as well be politics or religion.

AIRFLO SWITCH COMBO

Switch rods seem to be a fast growing part of fly fishing and I can now see why. This style of fishing is just so versatile, with one set up and a few poly leaders I now have a system that will Spey cast, overhead cast, Czech nymph, indicator nymph, wet line and Salt water fly and all for less than $500NZ!

BAKLAVA

The recipe says "This freezes well" and that is true. I put each leftover piece in a small Glad-type container and they taste fresh when I thaw them. Leftovers are not a problem, however! I hope you make this and enjoy it. It is time-consuming but not difficult.

SUNSET SULFUR

They say that necessity is the mother of invention. Such is the case with this fly. I created it out of frustration. The ‘sulfur’ patterns in the fly shops on my home waters, were not matching the color of the ‘sulfurs’ I was seeing on the waters.
