GET THE NET! published by Willow Creek.
If you've go short, stubby fingers and wear reading glasses, any
relaxation you would normally derive from fly fishing is completely
eliminated when you try to tie on a fly.
The average trout fly is probably no more than a half-inch long.
If you have mediocre close vision, it would be a chore just to
find the hook eyelet, let alone pass a piece of monofilament the
diameter of a hair - a transparent hair - through it. This is why
some older guys give it all up for Ford Fenders and Florescent
Day-Glo Cheezmallows.
There are some sociopaths who actually tie their own tapered
leaders. When you get to this stage, check yourself into a good
mental health facility, because you've gone over the edge. To
deliberately tie little microscopic pieces of fishing line together is
what Van Gogh would have done if he couldn't have painted.
Currently, leaders manufacturers use the "X" system of rating tippet
weights. X is a cross, which is a shorthand phrase for cross-eyed, which
is what happens when you attempt to tie a fly on a 7X leader. You
might as well throw your trout flies out in the middle of the stream for
how many strikes you're going to hook with a 7X. ~ Jack Ohman
