MATUKABOU STREAMER
Some guys on the bulletin board asked me to send this fly, tied step by step. This pattern is not my creation, I saw it many years ago in a fly fishing magazine, but I can't remember which one was. Perhaps I made some variation of this fly along the years of fly tying, but this one works excellent for me.
Of course I was inspired in the well-known Matuka, the New Zealand's fly. Instead of 2 or 4 horizontal feathers as in the original, we use 4-6 binds (is it the correct word?) of marabou.
Materials:
- Hook: Streamer hook #2-6
- Thread: Red
- Tail & wing: Pearl marabou
- Body: Light yellow chenille
- Collar: Brown feather (soft)
It is an easy to tie fly, and the materials are also easy to find. I choose here a pattern on light colors variation, which I use during bright days. Of course you can mix the colors at your necessity. My usual options are: black/ red or olive/ orange.
Of course the marabou action is perfect in still waters, with its slow "breathing" movement. It's not a fly for fast waters.
It's a good recommendation to weight the fly if you use a floating line; you can use lead wire or similar.
The sequence of the tying is...marabou tail, two wraps of chenille (secure it), marabou (secure it), two wraps of chenille (secure it)...etc.
