This is my version of an old New Zealand pattern that has stood the test of time and, has proved to be a good fish fetcher for me either in Lakes or River and Stream fishing.

In the Lakes I fish the fly as a Smelt pattern with a fast retrieve in open water and a nice slow retrieve along the edge of Reeds or Weed beds.

I have found Cock Hackles give a more pleasing appearance to my eye so I have stuck with them and have no regrets. Not too sure what the trout think but the way they accept the fly seems to me to be an endorsement.

Materials:

• Tail: Orange Antron wool
• Rib: Red Copper Wire
• Body: Olive Chenille
• Beard: Orange Antron Wool
• Wing: Brown Cock Hackle 
• Head: Tying Thread 
• Thread: Black Polyester
• Hook: Black Magic B6 to B12

Step 1
Wrap shank with thread from eye to Start of bend then spiral forward 2/3rd of shank let hang  

Step 2
Catch in the tail material

Step 3
Tie in the tail material

Step 4
Run the thread forward again and Catch in the Rib Material

Step 5
Tie in the Rib Material and run the thread 1/8 of an inch forward

Step 6
Expose a short piece of the thread at the end of the Chenille Body Material and tie in. Run the thread forward 1/8 inch

Step 7
Wrap the Chenille in tight close turns to near the eye and tie off and clip excess Chenille

Step 8
Tie in two pairs of matched Cock Hackles making sure they are directly on top of the hook shank. This is a bit fiddly but well worth it in the finished fly

Step 9
Pulling back and down on the tips of the hackle feathers position them on top of the chenille body and opening the hackle whisks with your fingers create a gap near the end of the chenille body and take the first turn of the rib material to hold the hackles in place on top of the body. You can use a dubbing needle to help with this step it can be a help.
It also helps to apply a little spit to the feather with your fingertips.

Step 10
Using the same method of separating the hackle whisks as in Step 9 spiral the ribbing material through the wing material and tie off at the tie off point and clip excess materials

Step 11
Tidy up the head area with the tying thread and half hitch the thread.
Use a dubbing needle to free any trapped strands of feather.

Step 12
Turn the fly over in the vise.

Step 13
Tie in a short beard of Orange Antron wool

Step 14
Clip excess and tie off

Step 15
Turn the fly upright again

Step 16
Tidy up the head area, Whip Finish the head and apply Head Cement.
GO FISH!
