DEEP WATER MUDDLER
I first tied this fly up for fishing some stocked ponds close to where I was living during the winter season. It’s a knock-off of another fly I’d seen somewhere. The materials are a little different than the original, and I’m not sure what it was called. I’ve had a lot of success fishing this fly in still waters with a sink tip line, as well as a floating line. Trout, walleye, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, crappie, and northern pike seem to enjoy eating it as much as I like fishing it. I haven’t fished it in moving water much, but what little I have, has been pretty successful.
Materials:
- Hook: Size 6 Mustad streamer hook
- Head: Large cone head. I prefer the nickel, but have used brass and tungsten. This fly was tied with a tungsten head.
- Body: Bass Pro brand Perl chenille in medium olive.
- Tail: Olive marabou with 2 strips of crystal flash
Step 1: Attach the cone head
Step 2: Wrap the thread from behind the cone head to the bend. I like to form a little bit of a ball behind the cone head to prevent it from sliding down the shank.
Step 3: Tie in the marabou.
Step 4: Tie in 2 strands of crystal flash.
Step 5: Tie in the chenille. I also apply some cement to the shank of the hook to prevent the chenille from unwrapping.
Step 6: Wrap the chenille up the shank and whip finish behind the cone head.
