ID GRANNOM
The ID (Ice Dub) Grannom pattern has been in my box for 3 seasons now. It was tied to match the emergent stage of the common Apple Caddis hatch (Brachycentrus Appalachia) in the Northeast. It has proven extremely effective when those fish are slapping all around you, yet taking nothing dry you are tossing at them. I grease the last 6” of tippet when fishing this pattern and keep in it the film as much as possible. Towards the end of my drift I will often tug the fly below the surface, then stop my rod abruptly and let the fly swing those few inches back to the surface.
Materials:
- Hook: #16-18 Scud
- Thread: Black 6/0
- Abdomen: Olive Ice-Dub
- Under-wing: Lemon Wood Duck
- Wing: Tan CDC
- Throat: Brown Saddle hackle (Tied wet)
Tying Instructions
Step#1 Tie in your thread. Wrap a base back to a point on the bend in line with the angle of the barb.
Step#2 Wax thread and spin on your Ice-Dub. Wrap abdomen 2/3rds the distance to the eye of the hook.
Step#3 Tie in your Lemon wood duck fibers ½ shank length past the bend of the hook.
Step#4 Tie in CDC fibers equal to or slightly shorter than the wood duck fibers.
Step#5 Tie in your Saddle hackle in wet fashion. And build a clean base of thread over the thorax area.
Step#6 Wrap hackle. Build your head back into the hackle slightly.
