Polar Commander
This fly was created by commercial tyer Jay Neve from Bellevue, Michigan and fly tyer Don Fox from Chassell, Michigan. This fly was developed as a night fishing fly for the nocturnal Pteronarcys dorsata, the Midwestern or giant salmon fly. The actual insect runs about 30 to 40 mm. When I tie it I use a #6 XL hook. Calftail or bucktail may be substituted for polar bear.
Materials:
- Hook: Mustad #9672 Size: 2-10
- Thread: Yellow, 6/0
- Tail: Two, Dyed Ginger Stripped Goose Biot Fibers
- Body: Yellow Deer Hair
- Wing: Polar Bear Hair
- Hackle: Brown & Grizzly mixed.
Step #1 Tie in a good base of thread.
Step #2 Tie in you Goose Biots. Tied forked and short. Then run the thread forward.
Step #3 Tie in the body. Tie it in lengthwise surrounding the hook shank, using crisscrossed windings of thread, down and back.
Step #4 Tie in the Polar Bear Hair, tied down over the back of the body, extending to the
end of the tail.
Step #5 Tie in your hackle. Wrap the head and apply head cement.
