Thread, tinsel, wire etc, they all come on spools, and left
unattended they will unwind all by themselves with no help from
us. They will ensnare everything on your bench. Entwine every
material known to man. They will cause you aggravation in excess
of any other single item involved in our craft.
The only thing we contact in our daily lives that is more aggravating
is perhaps a mean spirited mother in law, but that is a different
problem altogether. Perhaps we will come up with a solution for her
in a subsequent column.
We can quite easily tame your unruly spools. You need not spend
precious minutes untangling a mess of thread and wire. Nor must
your family be subjected to expletive dissertations emanating
from your tying bench!

Office supply stores sell, for a couple of dollars, plastic spiral
binders. These are used in conjunction with a special paper punch
in preparing reports and etc. The brand shown here is sold under
the name GBC. Generically I believe they are referred to as "Vello"
binders.
With a pair of scissors you simply cut between the rings of these
little jewels and wrap the separated "ring" around the offending
spool.

The package shown contains twenty-five binders, each having about
a dozen or so of these little plastic rings. They are sold in many
sizes. You will need to get the 3/4 inch size, as most spools are
approximately an inch in diameter.
So get out your spools and put a ring on them. You will never
again suffer a problem with them!
Now, on to the mother in law situation. . .
If you have any tips or techniques, send them along, most of this
material has been stolen from somebody, might as well steal your ideas
too!~ George E. Emanuel
