When we go to the fly shop to purchase our materials,
we seldom give much thought to the scraps we deposit
into the trash receptacle at the end of a session.
But, depending on the material we may be throwing up
to half of our money right into the can.
Typically for example with floss or tinsel we will
cut off a 4" long piece with which to tie our fly.
Having wound on the material which we need, we then
tie off and cut the excess, which we then throw into
the trash.
Having tied fly number one, we repeat this process
with number two, number three, etc.
For the sake of argument let's say we actually use
two of our four inches and we tie six flies. We will
throw away fully 12" of material. We could have tied
another five flies with that scrap.
How you ask can you tie a fly with 2" pieces of floss
or tinsel? Well, you can't really. But, if you will
cut your material say 14" long and use 2" per fly,
you will tie six flies with one piece of material
and only throw away the last 2" as scrap.
Therefor the 24" of material you formerly used to tie
only six flies, has now been shrunk to 14" with the
same yield.
If you have any tips or techniques, send them along,
most of this material has been stolen from somebody,
might as well steal your ideas too!
