Check Your Bobbins
By Ray Kunz

When I first bought a dozen cheap bobbins for the classes I lead I noted a common problem of jerky drag on many spools. When I looked closely, I noticed that the brass pieces that fit into the spool were conical and not spherical in shape. My analysis is that with a spherical pivot, even a spool with imperfection will at least rotate uniformly. A conical tip on the bobbin however, will bear on the hole in the spool only at two points unless they are in perfect alignment. In this situation, anything less than a perfectly round in the spool will cause a variation in drag. ~ Ray Kunz
