The hair that will float your stonefly or Stimulators
best also has a tendency to flare more than you want.
To reduce the flare of the wing, tie in a piece of
one-pound mono to the underside of the hook just before
tying on the hair. After the hair is tied down with
your regular tying thread, take one turn over the hair
about 1/8-inch farther back with the mono. Use only
moderate pressure and tie off the mono loop with your
