No-Twist Whip
By James Birkholm, Washington

As much as I hate to admit it, there is a very good reason to use a 'whip-finish' tool. I still won't use one, I do it the 'old-fashioned way' by hand, but here's the reason anyway.

Small diameter thread will twist into a pig-tail if you use a five turn whip-finish by hand and sometimes jam and break while tightening. To avoid this when I am using 6/0 thread or smaller, I use two whips, three turns in each, one on top of the other. With only three turns in each they do not pig-tail for me. This of course does not happen with a tool, the tool keeps the loop open as it is pulled tight.

Why don't I use a tool? I don't have to. Besides, most of the flies I tie requite 3/0 thread, (kevlar) and I use a five turn whip. ~ JC
