Fly Hook Comparison Charts

There will come a time when a pattern you wish to tie calls for a specific hook that you don't have and cannot procure at your local fly shop. What is a fly tier to do? You have to substitute another hook you may have or one you can procure to replace the recommended hook. Here are some comparison charts to help you.

Dry Fly Hooks

One of the most extensive internet sites for hook comparison and substitution is Killroy's Fly Tying (https://www.killroys.com), click on HOOKS at the bottom. The hook charts should be printed in 'landscape orientation.' There are five hook manufacturers listed. All five charts should be printed to get the complete list of all hooks for each manufacturer.

The charts also explain the different characteristics of each hook, as to the construction of the hook (eye, shank, weight, bend and barbs). There are likely other sites that have extensive hook charts, but this is my favorite.
