When tying flies I have encountered a problem with ribbing.
I suecure the ribbing and one of two things happens. The
securing of the ribbing causes a bulge at the rear of the
hook, or the ribbing comes unattached as I am wrapping forward
to just behind the eye of the hook. But the old light bulb
came on, and I will share my idea with you.
1. Secure the ribbing at the rear of hook with a few wraps of
thread as you normally do.
2. Lift the ribbing up and wrap once around the hook shank.
3. Wrap once over the ribbing.
4. Lift the ribbing up and wrap once around the hook shank.
Repeat this process as many times as you feel it is needed. What I believe
makes this method so effective is that the under-wrap causes a bump that
helps hold the ribbing more securely. Since I started securing the
ribbing this way, I have not had any wire or hackle come loose during
the wrapping. This is a great way to secure other materials to the
shank of the hook also. Can be used for tails or even for tie off on
collars.
