This weeks Tying Tip, comes from Michael Alwin, the Proprietor
of Bob Mitchell's Fly Shop, in Lake Elmo, Minnesota. While
in his shop I had a question on a fly pattern design, and Mike
told me about laying a weighed keel on the hook shank.
Most who do fly tying are familiar with the barbell weights for
adding eyes to a fly. This barbell will cause the fly hook to
rotate, where the point of the hook will be in the up position.
This is great if you are doing a Minnow Pattern, but not so good
if you want to have the point up on a Nymph Pattern, makes them
look funny.
The technique is very simple. Place the hook, into the vise, in
the normal position, Start the wrap at the bend of the hook.

Wrap thread forward to just behind the eye of the hook.
Then laying, weighted wire on top of the hook shank, wrap thread
to the rear (curve of hook) securing the weighted wire. Then
half-hitch to secure wrap.

Now you can start the adding material to the hook, just remembering,
that the top-side of the fly hook, is now the bottom.

Thank you Mike, for a great 'Tying Tip'! ~Parnelli

Most of this material someone else thought of it before we did,
they just forgot to tell anyone about it. Or else we just forgot
about it, while learning something else. Let us share with
each other, all the things we know! ~ Steven H.
