Velcro Bugs

To get a real buggy looking nymph a piece of Velcro or Hook and loop works great. All you need is the "Hook" side of the Velcro. You can use it like a comb to fuzz out the guard hairs of dubbing. Also works great with synthetic dubbing that could be used in tying other patterns such as scuds.

1. Tie in the tail and ribbing, then wax thread and apply dubbing as usual. Then wrap the body to a nice tapered nymph shape.

2. After getting the body shape dubbed, as you like, wrap the wire or tinsel rib forward and tie off. Take the Hook side of a piece of Velcro or Hook and loop. Use it like a comb and rub it outward from the hook shank to really "Fuzz" out the guard hairs. Do this on top, bottom and the sides.

3. Tie on the wing case, wrap more dubbing on, and then fold over the wing case and tie off. Then use the Velcro piece again, to comb out the heavy dubbed area under the wing case. This gives the appearance of legs.

4. If you need more, you can use the bodkin to pick out more under the wing case, but after the Velcro, it is rarely needed. This creates a "Buggy" looking nymph and is quicker with the Velcro than using a bodkin to pick out all the guard hairs. ~ Jeff Martin
