Materials List
Hook: MUSTAD 79580, Size 6 (I would prefer a thinner wire on
such a long hook to improve floating. If you know a good lightweight
2X dry fly hook please let me know!) |

Thread: Tan 8/0 Unithread. |

Body: Scintilla #26 Honey Amber (I've also
used blends of tan and yellow Hairtron.) |

Rib (optional): Gutermann's W331 metallic gold.

Hackle: 2 ginger hackles (This is a good fly to help you
get rid of the surplus of the larger feathers from your Metz capes.)

Wing: Bleached deer hair. |

else: this is the best ribbing around: strong, cheap, crinkled, shiny,

| Tying Instructions:
- Anchor thread and take to bend and leave a 2 or 3-inch tag hanging out the end.
Do not cut thread tag off yet as you will use it to split the tail fibers. Dub a
micro ball at the bend to assist with tail splitting as well. Tie in about a dozen
tail fibers so they extend about 1 inch beyond the bend, i.e. the same length as
the body. Separate the fibers in half and pull the thread tag forward between the
two bundles of tail fibers to separate the tail fibers. Anchor the thread tag.
Figure eight the tails to get a wider separation if desired. Tie in the gold
Gutermann's ribbing.
- Dub the body forward to half way or just slightly past half way along
the shank. No farther for now! Wind the ribbing about five or six times
toward the front and tie off. (Body dubbing will be taken all the way to
the head after the wing hair and hackles are tied in.)
- Tie in two ginger hackles at the front of the body dubbing, that
would be just past half way along the shank. Cut a bundle of deer hair,
stack, remove under hair, and trim ends so hair bundle is about ¾ inch
in length or a bit less. Anchor the hair with tips forward. (This is
a bit messy and tricky.) When secure, stand hair upright and wind
tying thread around hook shank at base of the hair bundle (and in
front of the bundle) so it stands up. Trim excess deer hair (butt
ends) behind the standing hair bundle. Take thread to behind the
standing hair bundle back to the base where the hackles are anchored.
- Dub body (now thorax) material forward around the hair bundle
to within about inch of the eye. You will likely have to stand
the hackles up and take the dubbing noodle around the back of the
hackles to fill in the body/thorax. You may also have to
work the dubbing material in and around the hair base to get
a nice taper. This gives a full-bodied thorax section where
the hackles will be tied.
- Wind hackles forward (separately - not at once) around the
hair bundle (not through it) and tie off at the end of the body
(thorax) dubbing.
- Form neat head, whip finish and cement. Manually flare the
hair wing.
