Orange Stimulator

Orange Stimulator

Thanks to Umpqua Feather Merchants, Glide, OR
for use permission.

Stimulators are a combination of fact and fantasy. They are designed to roughly match color, shape or action of specific insects. The materials used intend to cause fish to bite by "stimulating" feeding reflexes. These flies are a marriage of dry fly and attractor.

Hook:

TMC 200R, sizes 6 - 16.

Thread:

Fluorescent fire orange, 6/0.

Tail:

Dark elk.

Abdomen:

Fluorescent fire orange Antron.
Tying Instructions:

  1. Wrap thread in even turns to above the bend of the hook.

  2. Tie in gold wire leaving enough for the rib hanging.

  3. A small amount of dark elk hair, measured against the hook for length, to make the tail, is tied in.

  4. Tie in furnace hackle.

  5. Over the tied-off tail, tie in the fluorescent orange Antron and wrap forward toward eye to form abdomen. (About 2/3 of the hook length.) Leave room for thorax.

  6. Use a tuft of dark elk hair to form wing, apply a drop of head cement before tying down. A loop of tying thread looped under the wing before it is tied in will help it keep it's shape.

  7. Roll hairs of amber goat between your fingers to form a smooth roll, and wrap forward to form the thorax. (Leave room for hackle and whip finish.) Tie off.

  8. With hackle pliers, grab gold wire and evenly wrap forward to form ribbing. Tie off.

  9. Wind hackle forward evenly spacing to thorax. Closely wrap hackle over thorax to eye.

  10. Whip finish and cement. Tip - all the hair and hackle is held out of the way with the left hand, leaving no stray ends to interfere with the wrap knot. - DB
