Dry Flies

Black Seal Skater
Tied by Ron Eagle Elk*

Recipe

Hook: Light wire Salmon or Bartleet.

    Thread: Black.

Tag: Flat silver tinsel with fluorescent green floss covering ¾ of the tinsel.

Tail: Stiff dark brown to black Moose body hair tied long.

    Body: Black Seal or substitute.

    Rib: Fine silver oval tinsel.

Wing: Stiff dark brown to black Moose body hair tied forward and divided.

Throat: Four strands of pearl & black Krystal Flash.

Collar: Soft black or grizzly hen hackle behind and two turns in front of the wings.

Note: I caught my first two Steelhead on this fly down on the Toutle River. It was tied on using a riffling hitch. I still don't know how to tie one of those things.

*About Ron Eagle Elk

"As for my Bio, just a name and that I live in Yelm, WA is fine with me." That was all I could get out of Ron the first time I asked him for a little info about him. I just couldn't put such a humble bit if info for a guy who has had a distinguished career serving us here in the States and who is an accomplished Tyer and Flyfisher.

With a little help from the "management" Ron submitted the following. "Ron Eagle Elk, originally from Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, now I reside in Yelm, Washington. I have been fly fishing for 30 years and tying for about 20 on and off. I usually fish the Deschutes, Nisqually, Skookumchuck and Cowlitz rivers, all in Washington State.

After serving for 23 1/2 years as an Army Paratrooper and Ranger, I am now living a simpler, quieter life fishing and tying as much as possible."
