Q. From Aerdoc1or: At which time in the year could we look for a strong hatch of the golden stonefly on the Deschutes and Metolius Rivers here in Oregon?
A.
I called Rick Hafele, author of several books on
northwest hatches for the answer to this question.
He said that the golden stonefly hatch on the
Deschutes usually occurs during the first two
weeks of June. On the Metolius River, however,
the constant water temperatures result in a fall
hatch of this insect, generally from mid-September
to early October. These, of course, are the typical
hatch times and could be pushed forward or backward
if seasonal water temperatures were warmer or colder, respectively.
