Q. From Ccdg1962: In the emergence stage of a mayfly, where in the water as it rises does it release its shuk? Middle, or more at the surface? Or do they tend to all be at different levels? Thank you.
A.
Mayflies emerge from the shuk (exuviae) at the
surface of the water. The newly hatched adult,
called a sub-imago, could not survive if it emerged
while still in the water column; it would be unable
to inflate its wings and would likely end up in the
drift as a morsel of food.
