Q. I was wondering if fish (trout) had taste buds? The reason being - when you strike short/early and fail to hook up do they realize they missed a morsel of food?
A.
Yes, trout have taste organs located on their
tongues. However, whether they realize they
missed a morsel of food can only be answered
by the trout - and they aren't talking.
Seriously, except when they strike as a reflex
action or in defending territory, I expect they
are looking for something to eat.
