Here's a Question from Volume 5 - Issue #3 issue of RodMaker magazine:
Are underwraps necessary to protect the blank from the guide
feet? ~ Ben . . .Bend, OR
Assuming that your guide feet have been properly prepared and no
sharp burrs or edges are present, then underwraps serve no real
functional purpose.
The exception would be on very heavy duty offshore boat and
trolling rods which utilize high frame guides. In this instance,
the underwrap can help stabilize the guide on the blank and help
prevent slipping or twisting under extreme loads.
For more information on how to quickly and easily prep guide feet,
consult the Volume 4 #3 issue of RodMaker.
