Here's a tip from Volume 5 - Issue #1 issue of RodMaker magazine:
Safe Rod Shipping:
Most of us know that PVC pipe makes a good shipping tube for
fishing rods. But you still have to keep the rod from getting
banged around inside the tude. I like to use the foam pipe
insulation found at most any home supply or hardward store.
You'll find it to be very inexpensive and a little goes a long
way. I tape short 3 inch pieces around several places along
the rod and slide it in the PVC tube. Add a piece of foam or
crumpled paper at both the butt and tip and you are good to
go. This type of packaging really protects the rod and doesn't
add much weight so you save on shipping costs. ~ Richard Eklund
