From Volume 5 - Issue #1 issue of RodMaker magazine:
Get a small block of foam or Styrofoam and use it to hold guides after
they have been prepped for wrapping. Push the sharp end of one foot on
each guide into the foam in the order you want them to go on the rod. This
keeps them handy and prevents you from putting the wrong size guide in the
wrong place and then having to cut it off and rewrap. Something that can
easily happen when you are working with the smaller single foot guides!
