From Volume 5 - Issue #1 issue of RodMaker magazine:
A rod's tip-top gets treated to the most abuse of any guide on the rod.
It's the thing that gets pushed against gunwales, stabbed into
ceiling, etc. I have found that applying a small drop of finish in
three spots, equal distances apart and on both sides of the ring
guide, will really add a great amount of durability to any ceramic
tip-top.
When you are applying your finish, use a toothpick to place each
small drop right at the junction of the ceramic ring and the frame.
The finish will tend to flow out somewhat and form itself along the
seam between ring and frame. Remember to do this on both sides of
the ring. I have found it to be very effective and no longer have
to replace as many tip-tops as I once did. ~ David Gosnell
