When using single foot guides here is a way to keep them in
place. Place a stick of low temp glue on your bench. Then
warm the foot, after filling, over a BIC type lighter and
stroke the foot on the glue stick. Place it on the rod. Then
when all the guides are placed on the rod bank, use strips
of masking tape to hold them while you perform a static test.
I have a piece of PVC about 12 in long bolted to the wall at
a 45-degree angle. Here I can place the butt of the rod in the
tube and run a line up the guides then down to a weight.
(Mine is a water jug) I can pull on the line and cause the
rod to bend. I look for an even distance between the blank
and the line. With the guides glued with 'low temp heat glue'
it just takes a twist to release them after removing the tape.
Reheat and retape at the new location. I can then take the
rod out and test cast it. With the guides held in place with
the glue and tape. It will tell you if you have got the
spacing right.
Back at the wrapping bench remove the tape and wrap on the
guides. Caution: This can burn the fingers if you are not
careful and it takes very little glue to hold the guides.
If you get too much on the blank remove it when cool with
your thumbnail. ~ Allen Crist
