Here's a tip from the Volume 4 - Issue #5 issue of RodMaker magazine:
"Normally I use reel seats with gold hoods. In order to protect
them during various rod building tasks I will use masking tape on
the hoods in order to protect them from scratches, flue, etc. I
have had two expensive rods ruined by taping directly on the hoods.
Pieces of the gold plating came off when the masking tape was
removed. Since using the wax paper over the hoods and then taping
over that, I have not had any further problems. A man taking my
basic rod building classes informed me that he had done electro-plating
for years and that even finger prints on the metal before electro-plating
could cause the plating not to stick in those areas."
