Here's a question from Volume 4, Issue #4 Issue of RodMaker magazine:
"I want your honest opinion of rod kits. I have built several rods,
all rod kits and have gotten decent results. I am being told that kits
are not as good as if I bought everything separately. . . Frank, Los Gatos, CA"
There is no doubt that if you desire to end up with a particular
rod, and you know how to select the proper components, you will
end up with a better group of components if you choose each
one separately. Of course, this requires some rod building
experience and knowledge which can often take some time to
acquire. In this instance many rod builders get good results from
rod building "kits." The real trick is in getting a kit that has been
put together by someone who really cared! Most blank makers
do not package their blanks along with a kit so when you purchase
something like this it has usually been put together by the people
selling the kit.
For this reason I recommend choosing and using the services
of a blank and component supplier who can give you
individual attention. Tell them exactly what you want to
build and reply upon their expertise to gather the things
that their own experience tells them will work for your
application. Nine times out of ten I'll bet you'll be happy
with what they select for you. ~ Tom Kirkman
