When building a fly rod, I have found that I can
change or manipulate the action of a rod by using
a simple technique.
I use single foot guides and down size the guides
by one size from the recommended factory size. This
will increase the action of the blank for the following
reason. By using a smaller single foot guide which
weigh less, I use less rod wrapping epoxy which equates
to less weight that is added to the blank thus increasing
the rod speed when loading the rod during casting.
Of course, you can also slow the action down by up
sizing one guide size from the recommended factory
guide size and using double footed guides. The whole
purpose of building a custom rod is to tailor it to
meet your needs. ~ Mike Mendenhall
