When turning a rod that has a "ring and saddle" hook
keeper, the ring - hanging loosely off the saddle
loop - will often fall into the finish and cement
itself to the wraps and/or create blemishes in the
finish. To eliminate this hassle, use a needle or
quilting pin to hold the ring straight off the blank
while the rod turns. Just stick it through the ring
at an angle and poke the tip into the cork grip. The
pin will then keep the ring out of the wet finish.
Be sure to use a fine wire pin, or it will leave a
hole in the cork. A tiny hole will self-heal due to
