I went out on one of my normal lunch
hour excursions. I decided to try one
of my favorite flies just to see what
would happen. I had just tied a few of
them to resupply the boxes I take with me.
Cast the fly out and as it was dropping a
crappie took it. I landed it and cast again.
This time a crappie hit it but I jerked the
fly out of the crappie's mouth because of my
exuberance. It is terrible when you can see
the fish take the fly not to give a yank. After
a few more mishaps like that, I started to stifle
myself. I was catching a fish, usually crappie,
on almost every cast.
I was having a ball. I had another angler
using minnows come over to see what I was
doing. It was great fun to catch fish after
fish while he was standing there. He said
there must not be any fish where he was at
so I suggested that we trade places. I
continued to catch fish and he was getting
a few.
I had caught several in a row, when the
inevitable happened. The line broke or the
knot came undone. Whatever it was I lost
the fly. I tied another one on but it did
not work the same way. I tied it the same
way at the same time, but I was just not
the same for some reason.
The stupid thing is that I had caught about
50 fish on this fly and had not taken the
time to retie. I was caught up in catching
the fish and did not think about that. How
many times have I read or heard someone say
that you need to retie often. Not this kid
when the fish are biting.
Moral of the story is that I lost when one
of those flies that seems to have some magic
to it. This is because of the way it works.
It looks like every other fly of that pattern.
It is tied with the same materials, out of the
same bags. But there is just something different
about that fly. Maybe it is the way the Krystal
Flash is tied in. Maybe it is the amount of
marabou used in the pattern. I am not sure of
the reasons but I think we all have had flies
like that.
I don't think that I was fishing the second fly
I tied on any differently. I think I can be fairly
consistent in that. I do have confidence in that
fly pattern.
I may have to put a note on each of my fly rods
that says, "RETIE DUMMY." This gentle reminder
may help.
