I have been tying some to fill my cache for
fishing next season. I have been able to get
out a few times this winter on open water and
found that I had to fish very slowly, almost
stopped, to catch any fish.
Looking through a catalogue that came in I came
onto some hooks that have a 90 degree bend in
them. I know these are to make jigs, but I had
a wild idea. (Many folks say that all of my ideas
are wild).
I ordered some and I am going to tie some flies
on them. My thought is that these flies will hang
perpendicular in the water and not at an angle.
I am fairly sure that many of my flies hang at
an angle when I am trying to keep them stationary
or near stationary. I thought with a strike indicator
and by varying leader length I could set the flies
at any depth and then leave them stationary.
The water is very cold just after the ice goes off.
From all my reading, all the authors talk about
fishing very slowly in cold water. I know that I
fish slower in the early spring and late fall than
I do during the summer. So I am going to try these
hooks to see if they will improve my success rate
any in the early part of the year.
I am going to tie most of the patterns that I use
during the summer and fall time to catch fish. I
am going to tie all of them without any weight,
except those that have bead chain eyes. I want the
fish to be able to suck the fly in without any
resistance. Since most of the ponds I fish in are
not over about twelve feet deep at the deepest part
I think that I will be able to fish the deepest
parts with a long leader. Also, in this part of
the country we almost always have some wind. My
thought is that the wind will move the fly a little,
not only across the pond but up and down with the
slight wave action. This is the way I have seen
minnows behave while they are suspending in the
spring.
I ordered hooks is size 6, 8, and 10. I have had
better luck with larger size hooks in the early
apart of the year. The new fry have not shown up
yet so everything is from the previous year.
I am not sure how these will work but the idea
was worth a shot. If you have any thoughts or
experience with this please let me know.
