World Championships in 2000
Text and Photos by John Huff
This year's World Fly Fishing Championship will be held in England from May 14 - 21.
Stillwater venues for the event are the Chew Valley reservoir and the legendary Blagdon
Reservoir in the south of England where there will be both boat and bank fishing sessions.
The river venue is the equally legendary Test in Hampshire, the birthplace of modern dry
fly fishing. Although the Test has become somewhat tarnished in recent years, it should
provide both delight and challenge for the competitors.
Veteran, Paul Marriner, who has captained the team previously, returns to take over from
John Huff, last year's captain. The team members represent the country from coast to coast.
The World Championships are always tough on unfamiliar waters, but we have a fine team
of experienced fly fishers. We came very close last year in Australia, and with three members
of that team also on this year's team, we should head across the pond with confidence. The
team is as follows:
Paul Marriner (Nova Scotia) - Team Captain/alternate
Dan Bell (Alberta)
David Bishop (Quebec)
Kathy Ruddick (British Columbia)
Randy Taylor (Ontario)
Donald Thom (Quebec)
Jack Simpson (Ontario) - non-fishing manager
The event, as usual, will feature a Conservation Symposium after the competition.
Fly Fishing Canada Youth Team - We need Recruits!
This year we play host to the FIPS Mouch/Youth World Fly Fishing Championships,
which will be held in the Cranbrook area of British Columbia from August 14 - 22.
Teams from 15 countries will be taking part. The youth event has a powerful emphasis
on learning, with clinics and conservation activities taking up a significant part of the
time. It's a tremendous opportunity for young anglers to grow in all aspects of fly fishing,
as well as learn from other young fly fishers from all over the world.
Fly Fishing Canada invites experienced fly fishers between the ages of 14 and 18 as of
January 1, 2000 to apply to become members of the Canadian team. While we're
looking for youngsters from every province, we especially encourage applications
from British Columbia, the prairie provinces, Quebec, and the Maritimes.
Here's what to do if you'd like to be considered for the team. Write to Fly Fishing Canada
for an application form. Fill it out and send back to reach us by the deadline of May 1, *2000.
