Individual taste in books varies as much as the favorite rod or fly. With that in mind, we hope to review books and videos from the ever-growing fly fishing world, and share them with you. Books will be the best of all worlds, new and old. Many of the old books are now available in reprint, and the wisdom contained is timely today. Others can be found in second-hand book stores, or by mail order dealers. As we find videos we feel are outstanding they will be included. Be assured, reviews are based on what we have actually read or viewed, and due to that fact, may not appear weekly.

THE FORGOTTEN FLIES OF ROGER WOOLLEY

The Forgotten Flies of Roger Woolley

This is one of my favorite books of 2012 as it deals with one of my favorite topics and that is fly fishing history. Now I knew of Roger Woolley long before I read this volume, however I learned much through reading this delightful volume.

I know that many American anglers will not have heard of Roger Woolley and that in itself is a travesty as there is much to be learned from the anglers of yesteryear. I had only read a few pages before I realize that JN Watson was passionate and committed to the pages he was writing and I found it to be an interesting and easy read.

Thomas Roger Woolly 1877-1959 was one of leading authors in the United Kingdom during the fish half of the 20th Century writing several books and being a frequent contributor to Fishing Gazette in London. His contributions of the patterns and theories to fly fishing of his day were very insightful. Yet, generally speaking, outside of the United Kingdom he has generally been forgotten, however JN Watson brings his contributions back from obscurity with his outstanding coverage of this subject. I believe this volume belong on the shelf of any serious student of fly fishing history.
