Individual taste in books varies as much as the favorite rod or fly. With that in mind, we hope to review books and videos from the ever-growing fly fishing world, and share them with you. Books will be the best of all worlds, new and old. Many of the old books are now available in reprint, and the wisdom contained is timely today. Others can be found in second-hand book stores, or by mail order dealers. As we find videos we feel are outstanding they will be included. Be assured, reviews are based on what we have actually read or viewed, and due to that fact, may not appear weekly.

The Lost World of Mr. Hardy DVD Review - 8 Nov 2010

Recently the Ladyfisher received an email concerning a DVD entitled “The Lost World of Mr. Hardy.” They offered to send us a copy for review, and after watching the trailer on their website I told her to request a copy.

In a couple weeks we received a copy and popped it into our DVD player and settled back to watch the history of Hardy. Immediately we were transported back into a world that no longer exists, a world created by a family called Hardy. Included are vintage films of members of the Hardy family using their equipment, the invention of the first Hardy reel, the making of the first Hardy bamboo rods, and an extensive history of the Hardy Company from its earliest inception to the present day.

For 137 years the Hardy family company’s motto was ‘only the best is good enough for fishermen.” They did not tie flies but they dressed flies. James Hardy, the grandson of the originators of the company, and the last family member to run the company before the history and tradition gave way to the will of the corporate interests.

There are interviews with former workers, and it includes some interesting footage of craftsmen that are continuing to carry on the Hardy tradition.

Mostly it is a history of the modern fly fishing equipment industry. The Hardy Company was truly an innovator and the world of fly fishing would hardly have advanced to where it is today without their craftsmanship and dedication to quality.

Even if you have no interest in fly fishing history I’m certain that you will find “The Lost World of Mr. Hardy” a truly inspiring and informative presentation.

You can watch a portion of the DVD and get information on purchasing your own copy at www.thelostworldofmrhardy.com
