Individual taste in books varies as much as the favorite rod or fly. With that in mind, we hope to review books and videos from the ever-growing fly fishing world, and share them with you. Books will be the best of all worlds, new and old. Many of the old books are now available in reprint, and the wisdom contained is timely today. Others can be found in second-hand book stores, or by mail order dealers. As we find videos we feel are outstanding they will be included. Be assured, reviews are based on what we have actually read or viewed, and due to that fact, may not appear weekly.
THE FLY-FISHING PREDATOR
Raymond C. Shewnack is a retired advertising CEO and has been fishing the streams of New Mexico for over 50 years. This little soft cover book covers much of that accumulated knowledge in an easy to read, beginner friendly format.
The author compares a successful fly angler to various predators; a red-tailed hawk, gray fox, bobcat, wolf, osprey, lioness, blue heron, bull snake, and great-horned owl. His basic premise is, if we learn to act more like a predatory animal our ability to catch our prey would increase. Chapter headings include such fundamental aspects of angling as casting skills, reading the water, fly choice, and hooking and landing techniques. Each chapter covers the basics of that technique, and provides sound advice and practical applications.
This book is a primer and not an exhaustive treatise. This is an excellent book to give to a beginning angler, but even more experienced anglers will find some good tips.
