VERY WINDY
The temperature was not warm or cold. The wind was blowing 25 mph with higher gusts. It was supposed to rain and snow the next two days. Then we were involved in things on Saturday and Sunday, and I didn't think that I can go that long without being on the water. I was not even sure that I wanted to find the answer to that question.
I headed out to a pond that is very near the road. I didn't even want to try the canoe in that much wind. I grabbed a 5 weight rod, the fish basket and some flies. The pond was discolored from the rain we had, and I knew it would take some time for the ponds to clear. With more rain on the way it may be a long time.
I decided to cast into the wind to start with. It turned out that was not a great idea. The wind bowed the line in the air so much that there was no way to know if there was a fish on the line. I know this as I lost several fish near the shore.
There was one place on that pond that was a little out of the wind. There are enough trees to block the wind, so it was a gentle breeze. It is easier to cast there. The water was not as rough and I could see the line move sideways as fish took the fly. I got a fish about every sixth cast. It was not real fast, but it was better than staying at home.
I moved to a spot on the pond and hooked another fish. I landed this fish in and saw that it was very small. It was about three inches long and emerald green. I was not sure what kind of fish this is, but they don't get much larger than this. This is one of the reasons that I don't fish this pond much. The fish there don't grown as big or as well as the fish in other ponds do. My guess is because of the genes that this pond is full of little fish.
I did not put that little bugger backing the pond. I cast into the same area and picked up another one, and I ended up catching about 40 of them. All of them went into the fish basket. This may help this pond. It has the other ponds where these little fish have been taken out. I tried this area several more times, but no more fish.
I tried some other places along the shore, but could not detect if there were any bites. The wind had come up more and there were a few whitecaps on the pond. I thought it might be a good time to head home.
I had fillets to eat and to share. I didn't think I would have survived a week without being on the water, especially with no ice on it.
