ORANGE
I had a chance to get out for a couple of hours. That would be time from leaving until having to leave for another function. So I grabbed two rods and took off with two hook boxes of flies. I also had forceps and tipped material with me.
I had flies that I wanted to try, and I had also received some in swaps and such that needed to get wet. I headed to a pond close to town and hiked to the dam.
I wanted to start fishing along the dam as it has a break line that the fish might be relating to. I had a Goldie Jr and a black fur tailed leech on the rods. I cast those first as I wanted to make sure that I was on fish before I used the other flies. It's hard to judge flies if there are no fish.
I made several casts in two areas along the dam and had two gills to show for it. One, the Goldie Jr on a long cast when the fly hit the water, and the other on the leech when it was up near the shore. So much for knowing where the fish were. It was time to change flies and see if other things might work.
I tied on an orange Madam-X type fly and a purple wet fly since they were the first two flies I grabbed out of the boxes. I am very scientific in how I decide which weird flies to tie on, the first ones I grab. I made some casts and got a couple of small bass on the orange fly.
I moved to where the outlet pipe is since there are usually a few fish in this area. Not sure why, but it is not my placed to worry about that. I cast the fly out and let it drop for about 10 seconds. It is unweighted and drops very slowly. I twitched the fly and let it set. Did this a few times and then the line was going sideways. Set the hook and had a nice crappie on the line.
Why is a crappie taking an orange fly? Not sure why, but have had it happen before. I cast out in the same area and let he fly drop and then twitched it. I had another fish take it and it was another nice crappie. Tried the purple fly, but it was casting practice so I went back to the orange fly. Got 15 more crappie on 20 more casts. All out of a 5 foot by 5 foot area. Twitch the fly in that area and a fish was on.
I either got all the fish or put them down so I moved around the pond heading back to the truck. I picked up a few more gills, but did not find any more concentrations of fish.
I looked at my watch and the fish and decided to head home. I got them filleted and then cleaned myself up in time make the other engagement we had.
Shared some fillets the next day.
Hope you can get out on the water.
