In the snail mail this week was a single page pink announcement.
Well, it was that, plus an invitation to be part of this years
Michigan Au Sable River Clean-Up. It's a rather long
drive for us, and while we would love to be there we're stuck
here on the left-coast.
Here's the deal, this is I believe, the fourteenth year the
Au Sable River Clean-Up has been done by the Anglers of the
Au Sable. And it covers the main stream, north and south
branches of the river. It was great fun just to read all
the names of the various landings
and access points. Fun memories.
"The rivers are divided into sections and three-man teams are
assigned a section. The teams physically walk each section,
picking up refuse left from the long commercial canoeing
season. Teams will meet at Gates Au Sable Lodge at September
8th, 9:00 A.M. where river assignments, trash bags and Rusty's
innovative "poking sticks" will be passed out. "The plan is to
wade your assigned section of river and fill up several bags,
which you'll set aside on a log jam to be picked up by river
boat crews coming down after you. The boats will also be used
to access difficult sections of the river. Teams should be
able to walk their section in two to three hours, leaving
plenty of time to fish during the peak part of the day. We'll
also have refreshments and appetizers at the Lodge after 4:00
P.M. so plan on dropping back in to see how well you and your
team did. We hope you can make this worthwhile event."
If you happen to be in the region and can help out, call Gates
Lodge and make reservations - they do need to know how many to
plan for. (Includes food too.) I expect there will be a great
turn-out. Here are a few photos from previous clean-ups.
There are clean-ups in other places, for instance, quite a successful
one on the Yakima River here in Washington. In fact, if you have one
locally, please write it up and post it on our Bulletin Board. We'd
love to give credit to the folks who are giving back.
I hope this little article just might inspire you (or your local
fishing club) to give something of substance back to your favorite
river. If you don't have an annual river clean-up, start one.
Everything has a beginning - what a wonderful way to say 'thanks'
to your river. ~ The LadyFisher
