Here's an opportunity you don't want to miss. Your chance
to make more than a few memories. It's your chance to take someone fishing.
It doesn't have to be fly fishing (although if you have friends or family who would
like to try it now is a good time) and from my personal observations,
family (women and kids) should be first on your list. I promise it will enrich your life too.
Since it is National Fishing Week, most of the states in the U.S. have FREE fishing. No license
required. On top of that, most states also have special stocked waters to make the chance of
catching better.
Just click on the National Fishing Week logo and their site will give you the scoop on your
local region. There are also special events for kids scheduled, with K-Mart being the 'anchor'
in many places.
For your own information, you might check out the
American Sportfishing Association's
website for some eye-opening information on how much fishermen actually spend on their sport.
And did you know there are more fisherman than golfers? That one was news to me.
I am an only child, and my folks fished. I don't think they gave a lot of thought
about if they were going to take me with them. That was pretty much the way
things were then. Where the parents went, the kid(s) went. So I learned to fish.
I've told the story previously about learning to fly fish, from a very patient
Grandfather whom I followed around wherever he went. My hero for many summers.
As parents, we pass on things - some on purpose, some regrettably not. My kids learned to fish,
it was part of their lives growing up. I passed that on 'naturally' since it was how I had been
raised. For that I am grateful. They all have a love of the outdoors which I like to think is
founded in those early experiences.
I wish some of the family traits had not been passed on, but unfortunately like the old spaghetti
sauce commercial "It's In There" and they are stuck with it. Let's hope they pass on the good stuff and
avoid as much of the bad as they can.
For you and yours, get as much of the good stuff as you can. Help your family find a fun,
rewarding outdoor experience they can pass on too. Take your best friend, co-worker, or
neighbor. Get them away from the pressures of their daily life. Give them the most precious
