Almost Breaking Records

March 22, 2010

We missed 70 degrees by just half a degree! That surely has to count somewhere - the first day of Spring. I knew my husband Trav had something up his sleeve, but I didn't try and spoil his fun. We both have a pretty good attitude, that having to do with making the move, and wanting to enjoy the really nice things about living here in Washington state. I have a soft spot for a place called Point No Point in Kitsap County Washington.

Early discoverers misnamed the point, perhaps the word Hope should have been in there as it really isn't a point, but there is a very neat old lighthouse there, which may be the shortest one ever built. There is no high tower, it might be twenty feet overall height. But it is there, and the Coast Guard does have the early warning radar system in place. There is a lighthouse keepers quarters which now is the headquarters for the Lighthouse Association, and the other half of the building can be rented as a vacation spot.

From time to time the various salmon run past and around the point and fisherman do their best to catch them. I've spent many afternoon, early morning and evenings there - with pretty good results. The whole point, including the buildings are now owned by Kitsap County and they have done a wonderful job of making it accessible. On a low tide the beach itself is a couple hundred feet wide.

Trav pointed the little red car toward the road to the Hood Canal bridge and I suspected when we didn’t turn and cross the bridge that the “point” was the destination. We were lucky, they were parking places right at the beach (there is over flow parking too) and just a few people. I suspect Saturday and Sunday the beach was full of people. There are lots of things to see, wonders to explore and as usual we found some things which were mysteries. Check out the books when we get home.

We probably walked a couple of miles in all, we spent a couple of hours just poking along - I can't help but feeling so very blessed to have just a great place available just for the taking. We almost always see people with their dogs, but the point seems to be the place for water dogs like labs and they thoroughly enjoy running into and through the water. The water was pretty calm, and Trav had checked the tide tables so we knew we had a low tide, which just gives us more easy walking, plus filling every little sand pocket with sea water and whatever creatures were left when the tide went out. Amazing stuff.

I know Trav took us out there because it is a place I've become very fond of. I really will miss it, but my memories of "the point" are wonderful ones, nothing sad to spoil it.

Speaking of wonderful memories, there will be another Central Washington Fish-In! This one is set for May 13-14-15-16th, 2010 and will be held in Ephrata Washington, the same as the last few years. EVERYONE is welcome, if you read FAOL, you're invited!

I actually got to fish a couple of years ago, the photo below I believe was taken in 2008, last year we were on our way to the Bahamas for that ill-fated fishing jaunt.

If you aren't aware of the Central Washington Fish-In (or the others coming up), please check the Fish-In Menu at https://www.flyanglersonline.com/events/fishins/. Rocky Ford Creek is a wonderful spring creek managed by the State of Washington and open to the public without charge. A terrific fishery, no wading, all catch and release. Don't miss it!
