For years I have heard the virtues venerated and the
plaudits proclaimed for the superior 'Surgeons' knot.
Ok, I have used it too. It is fine for tying lines
together and even making a loop. I do like it as I
can actually tie it in the dark, one of the few that
we can 'see' with our eyes closed. I got to wondering
though why a knot that is actually even more simple
was not adopted over the years, namely the kewl looking
Figure Eight knot. It is easier, faster, more streamlined
and holds at least as well, if not better. Let me show
you here.
First I will show you in three steps the surgeons knot.
Watch how you must go through the formed loop twice.
Some even go through it three times. Makes a bulky knot
I think.
Ok, now you see what I mean by having to go through the loop
at least twice. Now watch as I tie it with two lines to join
them. I will only go through twice.
Alright now, here we go with the figure eight knot. I will
tie one here first just as a single knot so you can see how
it goes.
Notice how easy it is to form this knot by just twisting the
formed loop. Simple really and it is only one move plus pushing
the end through and it is done. Form a loop, twist it, poke the
end through and you are done. What could be easier than that?
Also it makes a knot that is not too bulky, good point for
leaders and line to leader connections.
Ok. Next here it is tied with two lines. Same steps. Form the
loop, give them a twist, poke the ends through and set the knot.
To make a loop start with a loop in your right hand
instead of one or two lines. Form a loop with it,
then twist it once and poke the end of the first loop
through it.
Well, there you have it. Give it a fair try. See how it works for
you. Remember too, if you like it and use it you will no longer
have to remember how to spell surgeons, try to explain that it is
not a knot used by Doctors and exactly how many times are you
supposed to go through the thing anyway? ~ JC
