He Lied
By James Castwell

There is a growing, heck it has been going on for years, trend among fly-fishers, in particular those who tie flies, of lying. Now I am not saying, or heaven forbid, calling our ranks liars, perish the thought. But most of us do it. To preserve marital harmony we must.

It goes a bit like this. If our 'trusting-soul-mates' knew for certain how much money we fritter away on all this stuff there would be hell to pay. So we lie.

"Honey, just look at the great Golden-twitchen saddle neck I found at a close-out sale today. It was marked at $85 bucks and I practically stole it for only twenty." There are the instances when a rod will mysteriously surface and must be unexpectedly accounted for. Again a vacation from the truth will come to our rescue and, "You wouldn't believe that a buddy I met today on the stream sold me this $425 Sledge rod for only seventy-five dollars." and so it goes . . . and goes. Life is like that, get used to it. Our best intentions can not reverse eons of survival instinct. We will lie. I firmly do believe we are born honest, but we get over it. If we are to fish, we must.

Now comes the reason for unveiling this 'pearl of wisdom.' Assume your best buddy snuffs it. Turns toes up, never more to share the gas with you on opening day. What is the first thing you will do? Right! Visit his wife.

Herein lies the rub. Your buddy has her convinced all that paraphernalia he has accumulated over the years is really very high priced and he got it cheap. You want to buy it. You have had your eye on half of it for years and by gum, you have a right to it, at least 'right of first refusal.'

Mike Croft Artwork Well, naturally she knows that and indeed wants you to have it. But not at a 'fire sale' loss. You are stuck and must obligatorily shell out big bucks for a lot of semi-worn out stuff.

So, Mrs. . . . . wherever you are. Let me inform you right now. He lied. There never was a hackle neck worth over ten bucks, no rod over a hundred and the rest of those things he had promised to me for years anyhow due to a run of bad luck at five-card stud. ~ James Castwell

Till next week, remember . . .
