By that I mean, stay informed with things.
Something new comes out, know about it. Be
the "first kid on your block to have one."
Where am I going with this? I want you to be
the first to know about new things in the fly
fishing world just as soon as they are available.
It is one of the reasons we work so hard at
doing just that.
As an example, just recently this scenario
played out. I received a phone call from the
American distributor for Marryat fly reels.
Actually all of the Marryat things that come
into our country come through him. He tells me
he has some great news. A new fly reel has been
invented, developed, field tested and is ready
for introduction.
Here at FAOL we are honored to have several
manufacturers work closely with us on product
introduction. They want to introduce the new
items and we are glad to put them on the sponsors
pages to do it. Win-win situation for sure. We
may be the largest fly fishing web site but we
are also the sleekest and fastest race-horse in
the business. Often we make changes on a web page
'on the phone.' The change is done live and on
the air. You want a job done fast? Give it to
someone who doesn't have the time to put it off.
Back to the fly reel. They were going to introduce
it in Poland at the EFFTEC show. That is the
equivalent of our big yearly show here in Denver
or Salt Lake. He gave me a secret link to a picture
of it which I copied. He emailed a sheet of info
on it. Then he said he was going to send me one
to photograph as he liked what I did with pictures.
About three weeks later it arrived.
My job, tear it down, take close-up pictures,
box it up and get it back to him in time for
him to send to Poland for the show. Only three
of the reels existed. We made it by two days.
Then he wanted FAOL to put it on his page on
here at the same time it was introduced overseas.
The same hour! We did it.
What does this mean to you? Probably no big deal
to most of you but, consider this. We all can't
resist going into a new fly shop anywhere, anytime,
period. Why? To see what's new! To see what we may
not have seen, thought about, never knew we couldn't
live without or something to spend more money on.
Was this an exception? Sure, kind of. It was the
first time we ever 'time-locked' an introduction.
I doubt it will be the last.
A lot of our sponsors launch the new products
on FAOL before the big show and before your
dealer ever knows about them. Remember, your
dealer or fly-shop depends on manufacturers
reps to stop by with things or the dealer goes
to the show and orders directly from there.

at least often we do.
Many times you will find rods or reels or
other products on our sponsors pages here
long before they show up on the sponsors
main web sites. Like I said earlier. We are
in the business of doing it, it's our job,
and I think we do a pretty good job of it
and so do they.

bet there will be.
Oh, by the way, a major fly rod company
has something under wraps now. We know all
about it and it's really new. Nothing like
