You ever have a tune running around in your head
and you can't get rid of it? Sure you have, that
is if you are old enough to remember when music
actually had a melody, not just a beat. Just think,
in the near future, people won't be bothered with
tunes running through their heads and it's hard to
whistle a rap. I have had an idea cranking around
and can not seem to shake it, so here goes.
It landed in my bean as I was reading a post on
our own bulletin board. A purely innocent question
about when does the expense end of tying flies.
End? Who wants it to end? Not me. That is what
it is all about. Tying flies gives us an excuse
to buy stuff. Everyday if we want to. At least
we can think about buying things. Not really
necessary tying materials, but feathers or such
that we think we need or should have for some reason.
The idea of tying flies is not to save money.
Good grief, it's how to be able to spend money.
Lots of it if you can afford it. And that brings
me to my main point. I think we spend far less
on fly fishing than we should. For years I have
been asked how much a fellow should spend on
such-and-such. I respond that they (you) should
always spend ten percent more than your wife
would ever allow. After all, she can only get
so mad.
Now that applies to not just fly tying in general
but our other goodies too. I think we scrimp way
too much. There are some misguided and naive
individuals who actually feel that it is some
sort of a sign of some superiority on intellect
to be frugal and thrifty. Nonsense. You got money.
Spend it. Makes you feel good. Don't believe me?
Go buy something. Get on the Internet and order
something. See for yourself.
Don't you deserve a new rod, reel, fly line, vest,
nippers? If we want to keep our recreation healthy
we have to support it and that means supporting
those folks who make a living dreaming up our
need and wants and making them available. Usually
long before we ourselves even know that we ought
to have them. Over-night sometimes. We are indeed
fortunate that they're inventing things and cranking
out products for us to enjoy.
So, to answer the question of when does the cost
of all this end; never I hope. It is great to know,
on any given day, I have the choice of stopping
into my fly shop or sending away for some new and
improved something. It is a good feeling. It is a
free and easy way to live life. Not all constrained
and uptight. Loosen up and invest a few bucks. It's
yours, you earned it, spend it any way you want to.
After all, "she can only get so mad." And you can
always go fishing till it blows over. ~ James Castwell
