Materials with a Touch of Genius

Take the hands of a fine craftsman, the eye of an artist, the experience of a serious angler, the engineering mind of Ronn Lucas Sr., and you have the genius which creates the terrific tying materials Ronn produces.

The Iridescent Flashback Scud shown above is a combination of two of Ronn's materials, the Iridescent Dubbing and Flashback. Quoting Ronn, here's how the dubbing came about: "My search for the ideal material lead me to develop IRIDESCENT DUBBING. This material is unlike anything you've seen. It is made by blending over three dozen colors in various formulas to produce twenty two colors at this writing. In a word, the colors are impressionistic."

The wing case shown is FLASHBACK, a plastic sheet material that can be used for wing cases, shells on scuds, shrimp and crawdads, fins on minnows and when cut narrow it can be wound around the hook for a body, tag or other effect. Many insects wings exhibit iridescence and this material makes the best cut or burned wings since Nature's own!

Other unusual materials with multiple uses are FOAMBACK, CRYSTAL CLOTH, SPAWN, FUZZ BALLS and GOCHA. GOCHA is a very fine 100% acrylic random length material which can be used to tie flies that call for fragile marabou like leaches, woolly buggers, etc. In the water this material moves as well as marabou but is easier to work with, can be used in a dubbing loop (unlike marabou), and is much more durable. Tie a fly, wet it and shake it off, you will see how little water it holds (again unlike marabou). This last point is important on larger heavier flies when casting. GOCHA can be used to tie egg patterns, "Wool" Head Sculpins and countless others, give it a try, you'll like it! You really need to see these materials for yourself.

Do you tie Atlantic Salmon or Spey Flies? Are you able to find the materials you want? Ronn Lucas Sr. has a wonderful selection of the common, the hard to find - and the very exotic.

Ronn has some wonderful Golden Pheasant mutants from one of his breeders. Among them are Salmon, Amgold, Yellow and, Dark Throat. Next year he hopes to receive some of the brand new and yet rare Peach Golden. It is almost all white and stunning. He can e-mail pics of many of his birds. He also gets other breeds of birds from time to time that have died at his breeders. Some of these are female birds that have striking mottled feathers. If you are looking for any rare and hard to find feathers please let Ronn know. If you would like to be placed on a list of folks who are looking for something special, let Ronn know that too. He will be happy to let you know when the item is available. He has access to many other kinds of birds, many from museums and zoos.

Hooks can be hard-to-find as well. Ronn can supply HERITAGE BLIND EYE HOOKS, PRYCE-TANNANT, HARRISON/BARTLEET, ALLCOCK STREAMER (Carrie Stevens) and GUT.

SPEY HACKLE: These are special feathers that Ronn hand selects, grades, dyes and, strips from the quill for some of the most awesome Spey hackles ever. The way these feathers are stripped, allows multiple turns at the head with virtually no bulk. 5" to 14" feathers so some will tie more than one fly. Hackle length, ¾" to 2" or more. Should be counter ribbed. The longest feathers are best used on very large flies or beard hackles. Available in a good color range - if you need special colors, call Ronn.

DYED BRONZE MALLARD: Intense colors on these feathers are matched to Ronn's Spey Hackles. These feathers will make your Spey flies irresistible to the fish and a joy to look at. Use them wherever Bronze Mallard is called for.

Ronn is also a source for the NOR-VISE and associated tools.
